163- Focus on Entrepreneur OUTCOMES as well as objectives

Struggling Biz

In this episode of The Struggling Biz show, we review the theme of business OUTCOMES, in relation to business OBJECTIVES. Now, this is discussed at length in a recent podcast episode from Todd Henry of The Accidental Creative show, with the title of “5 Steps for Planning your Day for Optimal Creativity.”

As Todd mentions in his podcast episode, many of us as small business owners and entrepreneurs usually think of business planning only to include the tasks to be scheduled and done, as well as the objectives that need to be accomplished during a certain time frame (he recommends a week at a time). However, he gives us the view that business OUTCOMES should dictate the real value of our planning and following up of the tasks and projects in our business and entrepreneurial ventures.

He gives the main themes in this podcast episode as:

“You have four finite resources to spend on behalf of what matters: focus, assets, time, and energy. How you allocate these four resources will often determine your success or failure. How intentional are you about making plans to spend them in the right places?   …I share a simply 5-step method for planning your day that I’ve been using for years:

  1. Plan your week
  2. Review your goals and “main things”
  3. Plan your day
  4. Review your day
  5. Review your week”

Now, the methodology that is given seems to be interesting, and as an entrepreneur who has taught time management and personal productivity for over 20 years, I tend to agree with him. Although my courses to corporate employees and entrepreneurs did not go into the depth that he has in this episode, I have truly followed his precepts, and I have seen payback in two-to-three times for investment of planning for outcomes, in addition to stating goals and objectives for your firm and the tasks that need to be considered.

Thus, in this podcast episode, he develops this theme around the sections of his model called F A T E (F- focus; A- assets; T-time; and E for Energy).

Thus, I would recommend that you consume this 27-minute audio episode to understand the basis of including OUTCOMES into your business planning and daily planning processes. Perhaps you will see (as I did) that we may become experts and planning objectives, but we really don’t include the importance of OUTCOMES for our businesses.

As Todd mentions in his podcast episode, he suggests using his  model that can be used to include the main sections of planning (including the pros and cons) when you consider outcomes: the FATE model.

Although we strive to use the best time-management system to make us feel productive by focusing on tasks, many of us forget about the outcomes and planning for them. We can have many 3-ring binders on our shelves with all the objectives that we have developed, but if we evaluate our past projects, we may probably find that well-presented objectives may not have had great results in the form of outcomes.

Thus, Todd gives us one more method to add to our day to help our objectives become effective into leading to key outcomes that all add up to the pillars of success. So reviewing goals and key things that matter to you can keep you on track to act as a compass that provide feedback to your personal and business productivity systems.

Thus, I strongly encourage you to review this podcast episode and show notes, so that you can enhance your perception of the relationship between objectives and outcomes — and also plan your way to become a more successful entrepreneur.

And please pay attention to the suggestions with practical information on how you can use these to become a better small business owner. And we hope that this information can be a great “gem” of information for you to help your business on the road to success.

Thank you for your attention.
