In this episode, we deliver to you two cases-in-point to alert the small business owner or entrpreneur or startup that is trying to include podcasting as part of the business for income generation (or it may be the entire revenue generation for the business).
One case history is that of the creation of the first flagship podcast series that I had, called The Struggling Entrepreneur. The mistakes made did, in fact, cost me the audience and customers and listeners due to just a negligent typographical errors on the part of the podcast consultant whom I hired to get my podcast show created and activated. However, this podcast show did podfade several years ago and was gone — but little did I know that this was the major domain that was needed for my next podcast show that became a later flagship podcast.
The second case history is that of my other podcast show that I created in 2014, called The Podcast Reporter. The same podcast consultant from my first flagship podcast did set up this show, but in order to save a few bucks on web hosting, he had used the earlier podcast show to carry the newer one (a shared baby account, it was called).
Well, when my account for web hosting was hacked, the web hosting service canceled my show and terminated my account activity. Thus, I had to be in contact with the tech support groups to reinstate the show. And since the virus crisis terminated their telephone support (supposedly 24/7), I had to rely on virtual chat communication (which, by the way, I did record as documentation for the communications when I paid more money to reinstate the account). Well, since the tech support contacts in the Middle East could not understand the language spoken, they were of very little help. They had promised that all would be fine in 2 days, then again the failure had me contact them again. For 2 more days, we went round and round without any satisfaction until the account and web hosting package was canceled and the podcast show was lost. That left me only with my media host (Libsyn), of which I have no complaints.
So, to make a long story short, I did lose a lot of data, business and customers due to relying on the podcast consultant for everything. And when things go bad, what are you going to do? In this case, I could do nothing but plead my case and lose 6 years worth of podcasts and potential revenues.
So the caveat I leave you with is to beware of entrusting everything to a podcast consultant. I suggest that you go through all the steps of creating your podcast show and hosting providers yourself, with complete documentation. And in this way, when the failure points occur, you can be better off than I was and be able to recover.
My recommendation for podcast consultants that will deliver excellent detailed service are Daniel J Lewis of The Audacity to Podcast and Gary Leland of The Podcast Repairman.
Thus, I wish you well in creating your podcast for help in generating revenues for your business, especially during this mandated lockdown situation during the virus crisis.
Thank you for your attention.
