152 – Why simplicity is key factor for business success

In this episode of The Struggling Biz podcast show, we discuss a theme in a podcast episode from author and podcaster, Todd Henry (whose flagship show is The Accidental Creative) where the title is “3 Ways to seek simplicity in 2022.”

Todd states the problem of complexity when he equates it to an enemy of the creative process in business. So he shares 3 ways to seek simplicity in your life and business work (in which he uses the P-E-A theme):

In Processes
In Expectations
In Assumptions

In particular, he stresses that you should ensure that your systems and processes should align with your objectives. And also, you must be careful not to make your processes and systems too complex, and that they should not be in conflict with your goals and actions you are taking. In fact, he cites the example of having goals that contradict your everyday processes to promote efficiency (where one may tend to be contradictory incentives within your mind and your tasks). These can be categorized as misaligned processes with your objectives, which can then lead to unspoken expectations from yourself (as an entrepreneur) or part of your small business team.

He also asks you to inquire within yourself if you have communicated clearly your expectations with your team mates, your customers and prospects, and especially YOURSELF. In this way, you can prove that your expectations must be REALISTIC.

Todd then focuses the point that sometimes our assumptions can make our business judgment and work more complex — including the assumptions that you carry of what should be true and what should be false. In fact, he gives an example of the quote he got from another author: “What would it look like if this situation were made simple?”

Also, Todd then explains how a misunderstanding can make your life a bit more complex, in the way that simplicity can differ from simple-ness or being a simpleton.
