33- Three practices to help your business success from Todd Henry

Struggling Biz

Setting up daily practices for yourself that will contribute to your long-term success in business and podcasting are discussed by Todd Henry of The Accidental Creative podcast show in a recent episode.

These three practices seem simple in concept, but to get them to become a daily habit for you and include them in your tasks, your planning, your podcast workflow or your business strategies for your entrepreneurship or startup strategy will require a mindset that is purposeful and dedicated.

For this concept, Todd states his precept:  “Talent will get you so far, but without daily practices to develop your intuition, feed your mind, and sharpen your skills, you will eventually stall out.”

This stage of stalling out happens when your deliverables or content that you produce becomes mediocre (and Todd gives you the roots of the word mediocre).

The three daily habits and keystone practices to help you become prolific, brilliant and healthy (his three objectives for becoming a good and sustaining creative pro) are:

  • Daily study — the importance of this habit is to fill your empty well and deliver to your mind the stimuli and creativity options that you can have when you LEARN new things or get new IDEAS and create NEW ROADMAPS for yourself (and, if you are a podcaster, for new content ideas). Often we just increase our own awareness of items in our world, but we don’t consume those stimulating concepts and futures that we can get from books, podcasts, and others’ words so that we can form our own NEW THOUGHTS. But if you can set aside some time (30 to 60 minutes every morning before your day begins, as an example, then you can get a daily habit.;
  • Reflection and Journalling — Finding 15 minutes during your day to reflect on what you are LEARNING from your study every day. These can include patterns, connections and see how you can discover new areas of your thinking when you process these ideas. And Todd suggests of “morning pages” that are similar to the stream-of-consciousness recording of your reflections, so that you can get the ideas into a recorded asset. Todd suggests writing on paper, as opposed to using electronic devices — but for yourself, you may find out that electronic devices may be best for you.
  • A Daily “walk” — This practice can be a great daily break from your patterns, attempts to deliver creativity and create new ideas. A lot of the ideas for your business and your podcast episodes are spawned from these daily walks. Todd suggests that you have some kind of writing note pad and note-taking pen or pencil. Not only is this a physically healthy thing to do, but it can also re-energize your battery and help you with your daily disciplines so that you can improve your sustainability for your creativity in your business or podcasts.

Now, although Todd stresses this for creative professionals who are in the business of delivering creative ideas on-demand, it can also be useful for the entrepreneur who is updating or creating a business or marketing strategy, as well as for the podcaster in creating new episodes or considering serious areas for monetization.

For my own practices, I have implemented these three habits (and it was not as simple as it seems on paper), and it did take me some time. But the results of relaxation, new ideas and even some excitement and anticipation of going in newer directions that I did not even contemplate earlier are all worth it.

So, even though this brief episode can deliver what seems to be rather obvious, putting these three habits into practice for your daily life can deliver great rewards that you will see within 90 days or less for your business or your podcast episodes.

Thanks to Todd Henry for these concepts, and we appreciate your attention.
