04- Small business mentality may prevent growth for a startup

Struggling Biz

We discuss the challenges stemming from this old saying that characterizes the futility that some small business owners bring upon themselves by their actions:  “A small businessman will always be a small businessman because he always thinks and acts like a small businessman.”

As you will hear in this audio episode, we have an interview with Dave (he did not want his last name revealed nor a photo of his image published). We discuss the challenges and perspectives from his experience within the world of entrepreneurs and small business owners when they sometimes prevent their own growth and limit success for their own business.

Can this be due to stubbornness? Or can it be due to ego? Or can it be due to internal fears? Or can it be due to the pressure of making sure that TODAY and NOW are the most important things to worry about? Or can it be due to fear from creating success by helping their employees (if any) become better equipped and knowledgeable to contribute more in a positive manner to the business?

These are the issues that face the entrepreneur in a small business.

Now, we did record this interview in a patio outside of a restaurant, and so you may hear ambient sounds, as well as the breeze of the wind (we did not use a windscreen, as we had originally planned on doing this indoors). And we had written permission in a release from Dave to publish this interview as a podcast episode in a recently podfaded podcast show which is no longer available, The Struggling Entrepreneur.

Thus, you, as an aspiring startup or small business owner, may see some initial success. And if your startup takes off and you get a few employees, there are some signs that your “today-crisis” mentality may get in the way of creating an environment for short-term and long-term growth.

So we wish you well in your path to success as a startup, and we hope that you can overcome the “small businessman” mentality so that you can get to the next level of growth and success for your entrepreneurial venture.
