13- Overcoming stigmas of being a startup — the case of Steve Jobs

We all have heard of the success of Steve Jobs, one of the co-founders of Apple Computer. However, his road to success as a startup was not an easy one — he had to overcome the stigma of being a small business owner and startup and entrepreneur in the mid-1970s. He became incredibly successful and wealthy — but he also had his failures, as his company literally got rid of him. Then he picked himself up and developed a vision for his future. And the executed the plan for his success, which led him to be one of the most celebrated pundits in the world of high tech, with the Apple computers, the iPod, the iPhone, the iPad(R), etc.

As you will hear in this episode, we reflect on his path and how he overcame the stigma of being an entrepreneur when the rest of the world looked down upon that environment.

Also, I give a bit of my own history and how I learned about being a startup at about the same time. However, my path did not have all the elements of success, for what I lacked most was the availability of enthusiastic and talented manpower to help in our efforts. Thus, as I mentioned “we did okay” — but I had to return to corporate America.

Overcoming the setbacks you will encounter as a startup is something that you must be prepared for. Your attitude, your planning, your resources, your manpower or partners and your products — and, of course, LUCK — will help you to be on your road to success, although it may be a bit bumpy along this journey.

Today the world does not look down upon entrepreneurs and startups as it used to. You have an advantage that we did not have in our past. In fact, there is more information and there are resources to assist you with your startup and small business. With this advantage, we wish you the best in creating your startup and overcoming any stigmas that may afflict you — including that of being a small business owner on your own.
